An aging workforce on the one hand and too few young people coming into the trades on the other are combining to create a growing skilled trades shortage for the HVACR and Plumbing industry. Industry efforts to promote meaningful, well-paid, trades careers across Canada are increasingly being recognized and supported by key agencies like Skills Ontario and BuildForce Canada. This session will tell you what efforts are being made to ensure the industry has an adequate supply of skilled tradespersons to meet the growing challenges of an increasingly complex and changing marketplace.

Paul is Director of Stakeholder Relations with Skills Ontario – a not for profit organization that inspires youth to pursue careers Skilled Trades and Technologies. In addition to stakeholder outreach and engagement, Paul leads communications and partnership development activities for the organization. He works closely with corporate sponsors, government, education partners and other stakeholders to achieve a common objective of addressing the skills gap by promoting rewarding careers in skilled trades and technologies.

Upon graduating from Lazaridis School of Business and Economics, Jessica Chalk discovered her passion for entrepreneurship and digital sales and marketing. By 2014, she had founded her own digital growth and innovations company, TrafficSoda where today, she leads a dynamic team of 15 employees, working with a diverse client base to help grow revenue and generate leads/sales by leveraging the digital sphere.
In 2016, Jessica was awarded ‘Young Alumni of the Year’ from the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics. This past year, Jessica successfully graduated from the 2019 Entrepreneurial Master’s Program Class hosted at MIT.
When she’s not working on building her own business, Jessica serves on the Advisory Board of ShipperBee and SkritSwap. She also serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics and frequently volunteers in the local community.

As a versatile marketing consultant and a seasoned software developer, Kristina has a unique blend of professional experiences and strengths. With background in Civil Engineering and Applied Computer Science, early in her career, she felt driven towards engineering marketing automation systems and developed several content distribution platforms geared towards automating lead generation and sales processes for her clients.
Through her career and observation of her client’s needs she expanded her knowledge base into psychology of decision making and delved deep into exploration of human emotional drivers. This career direction soon had her transformed into an in demand sales copywriting and strategy building consultant and a coach of obscure art of indoctrination in service of brand building.
At TrafficSoda, Kristina’s role is to devise and implement both technical and strategic growth processes for the company and clients.
Sizing a piping system begins with knowing the required flow rate, then balancing acceptable friction with material cost. But for designers of hydronic piping systems used in radiant heating/cooling, geothermal, or snow melting systems, there is another concern: if pipes are oversized, then laminar flow can develop, reducing heat transfer through the wall. Meanwhile, designers of plumbing systems must consider factors such as water conservation and water velocity, to help reduce water stagnation and improve water quality.
This presentation will describe the differences between sizing plumbing and heat transfer pipes, demonstrate an online design tool for pipe sizing, and introduce research that is underway to evaluate optimal sizes for plumbing pipes.
Speaker: Lance MacNevin, P.Eng
Originally from PEI, Lance started working for a PEX systems manufacturer in 1993. After stints in the Maritimes and Ontario, he immigrated to Virginia in the late 1990s.
Lance joined the Plastics Pipe Institute in 2015 as Director of Engineering for PPI’s Building & Construction Division, with a focus on piping materials for plumbing and mechanical systems. He remains active in Canada through participation in CSA Technical Committees for B214 (Hydronics), B137 (Pressure Pipes) and C448 (Geothermal), as well as CIPH’s PMAC and the CACP. He also serves on committees within ASHRAE, ASPE, ASTM, AWWA, IAPMO, IGSHPA, RPA and more. PPI supports the industry through research, advocacy, and education.

We know that improving the energy efficiency of our homes, buildings and industries will get us approximately 40% of the way there. But that will mean accelerating the rate of retrofits at a pace we have never seen. Come learn about what it's going to take to get us there, and what the HVACR sector can do to be ready for it.

Corey has more than two decades of experience leading social change organizations focused on engaging people to take action on critical environmental and social issues. Corey was previously the COO and Partner of global consulting firm, Realized Worth, a company focused on the design and implementation of corporate volunteering and giving programs. Managing the business development and operations, Corey worked with FORTUNE500 companies (including Apple, Deloitte, AT&T and SAP) around the world to engage their employees in critical and sustained community projects. Corey volunteers his time on a number of boards and committees. An avid reader, record collector and musician, his greatest passion is hugging trees and travelling the world with his family.

The phase-down of HFCs remains a focus of environmental regulations around the globe. For example, the 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol calls for a gradual phase-down in both the production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80 percent over the next 30 years. To date, 92 countries have backed this initiative including Canada.
Some international and regional initiatives are taking a more aggressive approach toward meeting what appears to be the ideal target of 150 GWP for refrigerants.
The session will explore trend toward environmentally friendly refrigeration as natural refrigerants will continue to proliferate along these well-established paths of least resistance. Still, there is much to consider for system operators who must weigh the opportunity costs for selecting a natural refrigerant option vs traditional and upcoming lower GWP candidates. The session will highlight basic design features, advantages and challenges of competing refrigeration architectures in attempt of presenting a balanced look.

Andre is responsible for supporting system-related innovation and leveraging Emerson’s global cold chain to drive adoption of integrated solution in North America. He most recently led marketing efforts pertaining to Emerson’s food retail and chiller markets. Prior to that, he had managed Emerson’s global CO2 development. Andre has more than 35 years of industry experience in sales, marketing, training and business development.

Sandy the President and CEO of the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). HRAI represents more than 1200 member companies across the HVACR distribution chain of Contractors, Wholesalers and Manufacturers. Prior to joining HRAI, Sandy was the COO at Star Media Group with oversight of print operations. During his business career, Sandy has held leadership roles in marketing, business development, strategy and human resources. Sandy has a Certificate in Business from the Canadian Institute of Business and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Queens University. Sandy has been with HRAI since May of 2018.

Philippe Cantin has been working on sustainability and recycling files for 15 years. He thrives on challenges and atypical projects. As Senior Director, Sustainability Innovation and Circular Economy with Retail Council of Canada, he leads RCC’s advocacy work on behalf of the retail industry in areas including product/material stewardship, extended producer responsibility and chemicals management. He also engages retailers in sectorial circularity initiatives and best practices sharing on plastics and textiles.

Mike Miller began his career as a certified Heating Cooling and Air Conditioning Mechanic in Europe. His combined European and Canadian experiences were a natural segue to sales and training. In 2013, Mike joined Taco Comfort Solutions one of the leading HVAC manufacturers as the Director of Sales for Commercial Building Services in Canada.
Mike continually gives back from his over 25 years of experience in this industry by actively participating on the boards of several Industry Associations including the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) / Canadian Hydronics Council (CHC), Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI) and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC). Dave Holdorf has been in the hydronic industry for 25 years, specifically in the radiant heating side of the business for the better part of his career. Starting out in the technical support/design role and then took over as Engineering Manager overseeing the Technical Support and Design Department. Later he took a position as a Field Technician; supporting training, designing, installing and troubleshooting. He is presently the Residential Trainer/Rep Training Manager, Eastern Region for Taco Comfort Solutions.
As building solutions swiftly enter the IoT ecosystem, the capabilities of these products and systems must be guarded against intrusion. The “intelligence” of IoT Systems -- whether it be water monitoring, irrigation systems, heating, cooling, and other smart building devices -- bring exceptional value and improve the efficiency of resources for building management. However, they can be vulnerable to cyber-attack. The products and the private information stored in them as well as their connectivity to networks must be protected to avoid serious damage to asset owners, individuals, and critical infrastructure.
This session will cover the various methods for designing, deploying, testing and maintaining the security posture of IoT products including security management systems, secure development lifecycle essentials, standards gap analysis, and best practice test and security validation methods.
We will also identify and review key concepts in several international standards and frameworks that provide a solid roadmap for organizational security, secure development processes, as well as device and component security design and testing. We will distill these standards into the key steps every product manufacturer and asset owner should take.

Laura Élan leads CSA’s Cybersecurity Service team supporting several industry verticals. Prior to joining CSA Group, she served as the Cybersecurity Practice Lead for UL’s Digital Health Service team, supporting medical device software and solutions customers in meeting regulatory and business imperatives for software and cybersecurity assurance.
Laura has more than 30 years of software and product development and compliance engineering experience, grounded in several decades of senior leadership roles with R&D and manufacturing organizations, including medical devices, and commercial and consumer electronics companies.
Laura holds a BSEE from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and an MSEE from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in computer science with a focus on cybersecurity. She is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois and holds the RAC credential from the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society.
